Still not able to get going for kids.
We need snow to open!
Usually reading the Open Snow Tahoe Report is upbeat, happy, encouraging. Even Bryan is getting a longer face. What is going on?
Here is the truth. The hills at Sky you can sort of ski on. So close. The grading work we did is paying off. Some have hiked up and skied down. Now the top of the mountain is granite for 100 feet to snow. The base area is reverting to its natural state of mud. Three feet of gooey snow followed by cold would fix that. Last week we got 9 inches of snow and that was enough to get instructor training going. (Thank you all that attended!!) This week and most likely next, see above. Really, the 50's at lake level?
Bottom line, until we get snow, Sky Tavern is on hold. The Operations Group and the Board of Directors have not tossed in the helmet on the season at all. When it snows we will do everything to get kids on the snow and there is 90+ days until the end of the traditional ski season. We have opened in March at Sky Tavern and we don't have a limiting closing date like all other resorts. Just find some snow!
Its all about timing and the jet stream now. If we see a pattern changing, we might force in another instructor clinic or do dryland with the kids. Dryland is a tradition, but we want it close to time on snow for the kids. We thought about doing it in the goose poop this weekend but looks like snow is staying in Japan for now, so the chief instructor types shook their heads slowly no about dryland.
For now I will email and Facebook what is the plan as soon as we know. Figure on seeing something Thursday to Fridays, and certainly earlier in the week once this silly weather pattern changes. Please remember the Go, No-Go decision during a NORMAL season is made at 5:30 am each day. When it is an obvious call, I will send out something a few days earlier if possible.
What if it doesn't snow? No clue. Never been there before. Always snows. A long time ago, in March, there was no snow on the ground in the Sierras at all, so my then 15-year-old uncle decided to go back- backing. My Mother decided that was a good time to go into labor. By the time I was born, there was five feet of snow on the ground and my uncle was lost for two days in a blizzard by Hunter Lake. And Keston Ramsey most likely opened Sky Tavern to kids skiing again that Saturday. We can do the same.
